SketchUp 3D House Animation in Widescreen
(Note: This version has the fixed audio and better color. See the ‘HD’ version for smoother playback and high resolution viewing)
This is a model of a house that I built (in real life) a number of years ago. I wanted to see if I could rebuild it with what plans, photos and memories that I still have.
I built the deck model years ago using Ray Dream Designer and Virtus Walkthrough (neither program is around anymore) to visualize what the deck would look like before I built it (in real life) as an addition to the house. I built the deck model to scale and it imported (.dxf) nicely into SketchUp after all these years. That was the starting point of this recent modeling project.
I did the time lapse sequence at the end to showcase SketchUps ability to set time and date for determining location of shadows. I also used its watermark (picture overlay) capability to see if I could line up the angle and lens settings of the camera snapshots that I had taken back in the day. I think it worked well.
Incidentally, I also composed and produced the accompanying soundtrack over an excellent beat by Zajo called “loop39.wav” from Freesound (http://www.freesound.org) used under a Creative Commons sampling license.

I rendered (and uploaded) the SketchUp animation at two different resolutions. 1280 X 720 and 640 x 360. I believe I rendered the Sketchups as .avi with a Cinepak codec. I did get some sound sync problems at the higher resolution for some reason. Who knows. I used Sony Vegas to pull everything together. For the faux timelapse sequence, I chromakeyed in the sky backgrounds. I rendered that using .wmv. So there’s two bouts of compression but the HD version looks pretty good to me on Youtube.

I’m using SketchUp 6 right now. I’ll upgrade soon. I believe I got the trees at Google 3D Warehouse. I usually modify them a bit. Change the textures and shape.

It takes some time to make things look as real as you can get them in SketchUp but it was worth it for me. And you can export the model to some pretty good photo-realistic render engines.

Hmm pretty impressive results. I haven’t used sketch-up after beta, as I thought it was powerful enough. Seeing this video now I can say I was judging before I had seen all features. With CAD import and userfriendly-ness it’s a great way to get clean models like these. Kudos

I see what you mean. I had to tweak the color in Sony Vegas for that segment. I was trying to get that yellow-orange cast look that happens briefly when the sun first comes up. SketchUp already looks kinda cartoony. But it would have taken forever to render with a more realistic render engine like Kerkythea. As it is it took like 19 hours over three separate nights.
Hey, your timelapse videos are cool. I wish my camera would do that. It that a still camera or a movie cam?

Many people, unlike you, cannot tell the difference between the most popular and the best or the most valuable. Doing something that’s difficult and takes some thought most always yields more satisfying results. Many people just cannot see the effort involved in producing all the really amazing things that surround us.
Thanks for checking my humble animation and keep playing with SketchUp. I’d bet that you could do some really cool things with it!

I exported a ‘drafted style’ still shot from the first camera position (Scene) in the ‘spin-around-house’ movie sequence. I built the ‘draftsman’s print’ cover sheet in CorelDraw and dropped that still into it. Export that to use as a texture map for the ‘draftsman’s print’ object. Render the ‘Drawing Board’ movie scene separately. Carefully line up the position of the end of that scene with the start of the ‘spin- around- the-house’ movie render in Sony Vegas. Boom. The picture comes to life.
